- Will the amniocentesis procedure hurt? The procedure does not normally hurt but may be uncomfortable.
- Will the needle come close to my baby? The ultrasound scan is used to make sure that the needle does not come close to your baby. The doctor will avoid placing the needle near the baby.
- Does it harm the baby? The ultrasound scan will not harm the baby. Direct injury to the baby is very rare but amniocentesis may cause miscarriage (1%) or infections. See section risk of miscarriage.
- Can someone be with me during the amniocentesis? You partner or a friend can stay with you during the procedure.
- Do I need a local anaesthetic? The procedure is usually done without any anaesthetic.
- Can I eat and drink? You can eat and drink as normal before an amniocentesis. If you are nervous, it is advised to only have something light.
- How long does the procedure take? The procedure takes approximately 10 minutes.
- When is the best time to do it? An amniocentesis can be done after 14 weeks of pregnancy but is usually done after 15 weeks.
