How is the Test Done?

• You are awake and will be asked to lie down.
• It is usually done without any anaesthetic.
• An ultrasound scan will be done before and throughout the amniocentesis.
• A fine needle is pushed through your skin. The doctor will then use a syringe to draw a small amount of fluid.
• The ultrasound scan is used to guide the doctor performing the test.
