Karyotype Test

  • Cells from your baby are floating in the amniotic fluid. They will be grown in a laboratory to look for changes in the chromosomes.
  • The test will not detect all chromosome changes.
  • If the result is normal, it does not guarantee that there is not a problem with your baby.
  • Karyotype results are usually ready within two weeks.
  • Occasionally, in 1 out of 300 women (0.3%), the cells do not grow in the laboratory and you will not get a result from the karyotype test. If this happens, you may be offered another amniocentesis.
