- About 1 in 100 women (1%) who have an amniocentesis will miscarry.
- 1% risk of miscarriage is the chance of miscarriage stated by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence and the National Assembly for Wales (ref 6) and is based on several studies.
- The chance of miscarriage stated by your hospital may be slightly lower or higher than 1% but will not be based on rigorous research studies. Local or individual data is of variable quality and should not usually be used.
